Tarot usually includes a deck of 78 cards, including the 22 Major Arcana cards and the suits of Wands, Cups, Coins (Pentacles), and Swords. The tarot deck most people are familiar with is called the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, first published in 1909. This is the deck The Turning Card uses for most readings. Other decks we use are based on this system.
Before a reading, you should think of a question or topic that you would like guidance on. While you can keep the topic private, it is also OK to tell the interpreter. A tarot reading is not a trick or a test. Sharing your question with the reader can help improve your reading.
Usually at a Turning Card reading, you or the interpreter will draw 3 cards. This set of symbols will tell a story. The relationship between the cards, their numerology, their position in the suit, and your question may all inform the reading. The interpreter will explain what each card means and how they relate to each other. You can discuss your reading or ask questions.
If you see a different meaning in the cards, that is OK. Every reading is unique, and there may be parts only you can interpret.
Tarot works through symbolism, like a story or play. Because they are intensely symbolic, tarot cards can bring up the unexpected. Some people find readings intense and emotional. Others may not be affected by their reading at all, or may not fully understand it. Most people find readings fun and entertaining.
You may have heard that there are “bad” tarot cards like The Tower or Death. There is a suit of Swords that can sometimes address anxiety and worry. Some cards bring insight to the conflict, loss, or heartbreak that may have led someone to seek a reading. Cards that appear reversed may have a different meaning than upright cards. While any of these cards can symbolize the more challenging parts of life, none of them are bad news. They are simply part of the story.
The Turning Card does not give “bad” or negative readings. A tarot reading should be a positive experience. If you find a particular card disturbing, we don't have to use it. We offer an alternate deck on request that does not include The Tower, Death, and The Devil. You can also ask the interpreter to set aside other specific cards. Your reading can still be just as meaningful.
Note that Rider-Waite cards may, in general, contain some mature imagery, including nude figures. Depending on the client, venue, or event, the interpreter may choose an alternate deck, or you can request one.
You don't have to believe in the occult to find a tarot reading meaningful. The tarot is primarily a set of symbols. The act of interpretation can bring up valuable insights and questions.
